Letter to Agent Joseph Lam dated 2/1/2000, translated into English:
Apologies to you lot for leaving during a crucial time such as this. Are we still inconclusive on the tapes? My hunch is that they are snippets of broadcasts, perhaps from the dates that accompany them… But I won’t know for certain until I see them with my own eyes. Not sure if they have any ties to the Diqin Bay Group or not. Get me any info on the guy, or the group, for that matter. Keep me updated Joe, godspeed.

Letter to Detective Kwong Leung-wai dated 4/1/2000, translated into English:
After some digging, it appears Zhenyuan was appointed to leader of the Diqin Bay Group at age 19, after witnessing a fatal confrontation wherein a rival gangster shot and killed his father in a confrontation over drug territory. As for the video cassettes, combing over them again, I found nothing of note. They seem to all be about 5 minutes in length and dated from the early 80s to the twenty second of December 1999. Included I’ve sent a cassette tape featuring audio recordings of 4 select tapes, and photos of the crime scene to accompany. Awaiting your return.

Q: “Any updates on the video cassette murder?”
KLw: “Information is limited, and highly classified. We are still unsure.”

Excerpt from newspaper story retrospective with South China Morning Post, dated 5/12/2009:
Coming up on 10 years ago, East Hong Kong was taken aback at the sudden dismantling of the infamous Diqin Bay Group, following the murder of the leader, known only as “Zhenyuan”. I had the pleasure to interview former detective, Mr. Kwong Leung-wai, who led the case.
I asked Leung-wai, “what was it like to pick apart the home of the leader of one of the most dangerous triads in Hong Kong?”
He sheepishly replied, “Honestly, looking back it was quite sad. Most days the poor guy sat by himself recording and splicing excerpts of television broadcasts. I think he was very misunderstood as an individual.
I inquire, “Are you aware of the underground following this case has taken up on the internet? Especially within those demanding more of the legendary ‘Tales From Symphony Bay’.”
Leung-wai says, “I’ve gotten letters asking to release more tapes, but I’m retired man, it’s all up to the higher-ups at the HKPD now. It’s not my life anymore.”
To close out, I ask, “Speaking of, how have you been doing in retirement?”
He paused for a moment to think.
“Honestly, I’ve been quite nostalgic. I have also been relating more and more to the ‘infamous Zhenyuan’. In retrospect, going over the tapes with my colleagues were some of the fondest memories I have in my life. I feel as though Zhenyuan gave us- well, whether he knew it or not, Zhenyuan gave us a bit of a gift. These remnants of tapes are what’s left of a strange bygone era in our city. I miss those times, but as I said, it’s not my life anymore.”
Included is a download link to the 4 publicly available tapes, known as “Tales From Symphony Bay”.
